What is it?

Zinc is a mineral that is a cofactor for over 300 enzyme processes. In humans it is considered an essential trace mineral. Cofactors like zinc are crucial at a cellular level to be able to make and repair tissue, to grow and for wound healing.

Where does it come from?

Dietary zinc is found in red meat, poultry, dairy, eggs, seafood and shellfish, legumes, nuts and seeds as well as fortified foods.  What does it do? Zinc is a cofactor for over 300 enzyme processes in the body, including processes affecting vision, antioxidant status, insulin function and more. It is involved in the making of cholesterol, protein and fats and also regulates Vitamin A release from the liver. Zinc is crucial for immune regulation by enhancing the function of the T cells which help fight infection. It also regulates inflammation.

Deficiencies in zinc lead to inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid and psoriatic arthritis, decreased number and also the fighting capacity of the immune system (NK cells, T cells), and recurrent upper respiratory infections. Zinc is documented to enhance immune function in the elderly as well as exercise performance (hence cellular energy). It has also been shown to reduce the duration of the common cold.
