Zinc is a mineral that is a cofactor for over 300 enzyme processes. In humans, it is considered an essential trace mineral. Cofactors like Zinc are crucial at a cellular level to make and repair tissue, grow, and heal wounds.

Where does it come from?

Dietary Zinc is found in red meat, poultry, dairy, eggs, seafood and shellfish, legumes, nuts and seeds, and fortified foods.

What does it do?

Zinc is a cofactor for over 300 enzyme processes in the body, including processes affecting vision, antioxidant status, insulin function, and more. It is involved in making cholesterol, protein, and fats and regulates Vitamin A release from the liver. Zinc is crucial for immune regulation by enhancing the function of the T cells, which help fight infection. It also regulates inflammation.

When I recommend it

Zinc deficiencies lead to inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid and psoriatic arthritis, decreased number and fighting capacity of the immune system (NK cells, T cells), and recurrent upper respiratory infections. Zinc is documented to enhance immune function in older adults and exercise performance (hence cellular energy). It has also been shown to reduce the duration of the common cold.
