Vitamin D is one of the main fat-soluble vitamins, along with vitamins A, K, and E. These fat-soluble vitamins are unique in the body as they act similar to hormones in that they enter the cell, enter the nucleus, regulate gene expression, and orchestrate numerous metabolic processes. They are vital to optimal health, and deficiency is prevalent.

Where does it come from?

Vitamin D is found in food sources such as oily fish, eggs, liver, mushrooms, and some milk and cheeses, as well as in certain fortified foods and Cod Liver Oil. It is also created in the body from cholesterol under skin exposure to UVB radiation from the sun. Sun exposure can make enough Vitamin D to prevent deficiency. However, most of us in North America are too far north of the equator and use too much sunscreen to make this possible. Suboptimal Vitamin D levels are the norm in this country.

The popularity of the importance of Vitamin D has grown over the past 20 years to the point where even conventional medical doctors have seen the research on the detrimental effects of deficiency and are also testing Vitamin D levels in the blood. Optimal blood levels of Vitamin D are 60-80 ng/ml, well within the “normal” range of 30-100 ng/ml.

What does it do?

The best answer to this is, what doesn’t it do? I say this because Vitamin D, like the other fat-soluble vitamins, enters all cells and orchestrates cellular activity. This means that Vitamin D affects all cells, all tissues, and all organs in the body. Most importantly, Vitamin D helps with calcium and phosphorus metabolism (bone formation) and regulates immune function, blood pressure, muscle metabolism, blood sugar function, and so much more. Entire books and multi-day conferences have been dedicated to this essential, very commonly deficient nutrient. Vitamin D is crucial for immune homeostasis and the prevention of disease.

Deficiency in Vitamin D has been linked to osteoporosis (rickets if severe), arthritis, autoimmune disease, cancer, chronic pain, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, menstrual issues, chronic fatigue, insomnia, depression, obesity, as well as chronic infections, more frequent and severe respiratory infections, COVID-19, colds and flu.

What was it recommended to you?

Vitamin D contributes to a robust immune system, infection prevention, and increased ability to fight infection. It boosts the ability of the immune system to fight infection and has a direct antimicrobial effect.
