What is DHEA?

DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) is the other primary adrenal hormone next to cortisol. Both men and women have more DHEA in their bodies than any other hormone. DHEA levels are highest in our teens and twenties and decline with age and stress. DHEA is responsible for inducing puberty in both men and women. DHEA is technically an androgen, or male-like hormone, similar to testosterone. That said, both men and women produce DHEA throughout our lives, and our general well-being and ability to age gracefully depends on our levels of DHEA. DHEA acts on cells but can also convert into testosterone or estrogen. This is a vital part of its benefits. If this conversion occurs without balance, however, it can contribute to potential side effects. Men tend to tolerate DHEA better than women. That said, post-menopausal women tend to handle DHEA quite well, though it can be used in both men and women of all ages. 

What is DHEA's role in the body?

DHEA acts on every cell and every system of the body, and it acts as a catalyst to optimize function all over the body. Evidence suggests that higher DHEA levels are associated with the prevention of obesity, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, allergies, and various autoimmune diseases. DHEA supports immune function, cognitive function, and is thought of as an anti-aging hormone, as it appears to prolong life.

How does DHEA fit into the holistic treatment of Adrenal Fatigue?

DHEA supplementation is used in patients with lower than normal (for their age) DHEA levels upon testing. Dr. Neville typically uses DHEA supplementation to support DHEA in men, and uses Pregnenolone to support DHEA in women. However, Dr. Neville has used both hormones in both sexes under various circumstances. Like Pregnenolone, supplementing with DHEA is a form of bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT). Adrenal BHRT is the safest form of hormone replacement because it treats at a deeper level than does using estrogen, progesterone, or testosterone. If the DHEA is doing what it is meant to do, someone who takes it should not notice much change initially. It is possible, however, that you may have a bit less fatigue or more stamina, a bit less anxiety or nervousness, or perhaps your brain fog will lift a bit. You may notice "nothing."
