From Dr. Neville:
Resveratrol is a bioflavonoid (technically a polyphenol) that is found primarily in blue and red grapes and berries. It has been called the “French paradox” in a bottle because it is found in red wine. Plants produce Resveratrol in response to the stress of injury, fungal infection, or UV radiation.
There is evidence in the research literature that supports the role of Resveratrol in modulating the HPA axis, acting as an anti-inflammatory, reducing oxidative stress, stimulating neurogenesis (promoting hippocampal/limbic system repair), supporting certain neurotransmitter levels, as well as stimulating mitochondrial biogenesis. These actions only touch on the effects of this molecule, but they are primarily for our purposes.
Each of these mechanisms is incredibly important for patients who have Adrenal Dysfunction from chronic stress over time. To find all of these actions in one single molecule is incredible. I am most excited about the promotion of neurogenesis and mitochondrial biogenesis.
Neurogenesis can be thought of as the healing and rewiring of the “CEO” of our stress response system, the limbic system. The healing of the limbic system is like replacing the CEO of a company, for instance, who is toxic and dysfunctional, with an educated, illuminated, progressive, stable CEO and their team.
The stimulation of the production of new mitochondria is beneficial because of the damage done through oxidative stress to our current mitochondria. This is crucial because the mitochondria are the little energy producers in each and every cell. Creating new mitochondria will then help with energy.
I use this particular remedy because of my patients' tendency toward a “sensitized” nervous system, which makes you more sensitive in general.
Central sensitization is the process by which our body over-interprets stimuli as dangerous and therefore stress-response inducing. This response not only triggers cortisol and adrenaline but inflammation everywhere, including in the brain, all of which perpetuate the cycle. This cycle starts in the brain’s limbic system, just above the downline pathway toward the HPA axis.
A sensitized nervous system can show up in the body with lowered stress tolerance, anxiety, and depression, insomnia, pain, as well as heightened sensory nerves: light sensitivity, sound sensitivity, smell/chemical sensitivity, and even a heightened startle response. Over time, Resveratrol can assist in quieting your system and can improve these symptoms.
